As of April 1, 2019, the new law banning the sale of installation of any smoke detecting device that has a battery that an be replaced or removed went into effect in New York State. Legislators originally passed a Jan. 1, 2017 date for the law, but it was later amended to go into effect on April 1 of this year. New smoke detectors have a sealed lithium battery that people cannot remove. The law, however, does not require smoke detectors that are already in use to be in compliance – only ones that are being newly installed or replaced.
