Pantone Selects Two 2021 Colors of the Year

The color combo aims to exude peacefulness while brightening the mood in home decor.

A peaceful, subdued tone and cheerful, vibrant color make up the color combo of Pantone’s “2021 Colors of the Year.” This year the paint firm chose two paint colors—Ultimate Gray, a nature-inspired nod to pebbles on a beach, and Illuminating, a bright yellow hue.

Pantone notes that Ultimate Gray and Illuminating can be a colorful combo used in home design to add a “dose of sunshine and positivity.” They suggest combining the two shades in table linens, sheets, and home accessories, like pillows, to liven up a room.

“Painting a front door in bright yellow Illuminating conveys a warm and welcoming message when supported by solid and dependable Ultimate Gray in the exterior finishes,” they added.

They also recommended the hues be combined in a home office as a strategic choice with color psychology inspiration. After all, a vibrant yellow is believed to heighten awareness and enhance intuition, they note.

“The union of an enduring Ultimate Gray with the vibrant yellow Illuminating expresses a message of positivity supported by fortitude,” says Leatrice Eiseman, executive director of the Pantone Color Institute. “Practical and rock solid but at the same time warming and optimistic, this is a color combination that gives us resilience and hope.”

Pantone had selected “Classic Blue” as its “2020 Color of the Year.”
